Something to think about

For students who are going to research on the contemporary audience and the audience of the past, the above video is something that might help you guys get started. The video shows a set of contemporary audience, what you guys can keep in mind is what type of audience is the RSC catering to?

  1. This clip is so funny! Hmm ... they speak of Shakespeare's plays as though it is very difficult and challenging to understand. I think that this might be the case for audiences today but in Shakespeare's time, the audience might be better able to understand the language used in Shakespeare's plays as there is quite a mixture of poetic verse passages as well as simpler prose passages. I think they also made a parody of the theatre-going experience today when they told the audience not to eat, drink or smoke in the theatre. During Shakespeare's time, I think the audience was definitely much rowdier than that!

  2. It is true that the audience of the past were much rowdier compared to the audience of the present. What does this tell you of the makeup of the audience? Can it be explained by their social status? Maybe you want to consider the social classes of this two different group of audiences.
